Joyce’s  Story...

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more inspiring story of entrepreneurship than Joyce Holt. The owner of Window Works in Little Rock, Holt had no idea that when she learned to sew as a little girl in Tennessee that she would one day have a successful business designing draperies for homes, hotels and commercial properties throughout the United States and France as a grown woman.

“When I was growing up, there were three things a woman could have as a career outside the home: secretary, nurse or teacher,” Holt said. “I never thought being a seamstress and, ultimately, having my own business, would be my career.”

Living on an Indian reservation in South Dakota, Holt met and started working with a woman who made draperies for Housing and Urban Development. Through this contract they made and installed draperies for 150 houses. When she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, Holt decided to continue designing and sewing draperies.

“I had children then, and I didn’t want to go back to teaching,” Holt said. “I found ladies who wanted to work at home, and I taught them how to make draperies. When I left Nashville, I was working with eight ladies who sewed draperies from their homes.”

It wasn’t until she moved to Arkansas that Holt made her drapery business an official business.

“I remember driving over the bridge across the Mississippi River,” she said. “There was a sign that said, ‘Welcome to Arkansas – Land of Opportunity,’ and I took that seriously.”

As Holt became familiar with her new home, she happened upon a new neighborhood development on Pebble Beach off Hinson Road. Many homes had moving boxes in the driveway and sheets in the windows, and Holt knew this was the place to start.

“I made myself go back the next day and knock on three doors,” she said. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. At the first house, no one was home, but someone was at the next house, and she was happy to listen to what I had to say, and I left with an order.”

That was 1978, and since that time, Holt has designed, delivered and installed custom draperies, pillows and fabric accessories for some of the most stylish homes in Arkansas, California and the world.

“Our main strength is windows,” Holt said. “We know what will suit a room, how draperies can be used to control light and heat, what options are available to serve what someone needs. The trend now is going away from complex designs to simpler looks, and there is such a variety that we can help guide the home or property owner in what will work best.”

One of these options is hard window coverings like shades, blinds and shutters. An innovation Holt particularly likes is the cordless shade.

“Children and pets can get tangled in them and get hurt,” Holt explained. “They also can be unsightly. The shades and blinds we have are cordless, and they’ll make you wonder why cords were even necessary.”
